Making a Wish Come True

Vipassana Meditation Master

Acharavadee Wongsakon

If you don’t believe in making a wish, don’t do it.

A wish can easily come true if it’s based on highly meritorious deed.

When meditators make a wish after completing their Vipassana meditation course, saying “With the merit from my meditation practice, may I…”, they make a wish for good things to happen to themselves and others, but not a wish to fulfill their lust for greed or their personal interests.

This kind of wish is different from wishes commonly made by most people. Those wishes hardly come true and sometimes backfire such as the wish to be reborn together with their loved ones or to become a millionaire. It’s these wishes which chain their souls to the cycle of birth and death.

As a Vipassana master who teaches the way to liberation, I never bless anyone to be rich because rich people tend to be addicted to their wealth, power, social status, resulting in them being trapped in this cycle endlessly.

This is why most spiritual teachers avoid giving such a blessing. However, if they see people living in extreme hardship or desperate situation, they will bless them with ‘prosperity’ which covers all aspects of life. Laypeople will always find supporters who give them opportunities wherever they go. If they are monks, they will also make progress in Dhamma.

In making big meritorious deeds such as attending a Vipassana meditation course or spending time and effort for religious cause, the Triple Gem, spiritual teachers, angels, and spirits will be there with the meditators to rejoice in the great merit. When they make wishes, those in the other dimension will try to help fulfill them, on the condition that the Karma of the practitioners are not too grave. The reason is that helping good people will in turn strengthen the Good Force in the world.

The wishes made by people with large merit are fulfilled very early. For example, one day I thought about getting a rug for students to sit on during meditation review. Next morning, a student brought me a Persian rug. Whether small or big, if what I want is for the benefits of others, I will always have it. The reason is that the angels can sense my thoughts and try to do everything to support me so that they will also gain the merit.

When a wish is well thought and made with strong determination, there is no way it will not be fulfilled; some kind of result will eventually happen depending on the type of good deed. In contrast, if it’s a wish involving greed, anger, and delusion, the Dark Side will be listening to it, leading to stronger Impurity Force in that person’s mind. He will be drawn to spend time with similar type of people have little interest in spiritual development.

During the New Year’s season which is the time to make a wish, pay attention to what you wish for. It’s best to make a wish that contributes to your long-term prosperity.

Make a wish not to lose to your own weaknesses, to have prosperity in life, to be surrounded by good friends and people, and away from destructive mindset and beliefs. Most importantly, make a wish for yourself to find Dhamma that takes you to freedom from the cycle of suffering. In any case, don’t make a wish to get rich.

Do make a wish with full attention. Ultimately, the wish made with integrity and determination will come true.
