After years of aggressive advocacy for merging education with technology, governments worldwide have slammed the brakes on classroom tablets and started banning social media in an effort to fix plummeting grades that have fallen even below pre-AI levels, as kids’ attention spans shrink faster than they did in the search-engine era.
Sweden, long seen as a global leader in adopting digital technology, just announced that by the next academic year in the fall, phones and other devices will be banned from classrooms, after reading and writing skills among young students have dropped sharply. The government has already approved $59 million for printed textbooks, building on last year’s rule requiring children under two to learn from physical books only.
