Once a grand teakwood mansion of Chiang Mai on Thapae Road – the city’s very irst department store back in 1888 – is now reimagined as Kitipanit, a Northern Thai dining destination. Inside, the air carries the aroma of Lanna classics: steaming bowls of khao soi, smoky coils of sai oua, earthy tam khanun, and iery nam prik surrounded by fresh vegetables arranged in intricate basketry. Alongside these familiar comforts come dishes that reveal deeper layers of local tradition – crispy chicken dusted with wild Sichuan pepper, a tangy salad of fermented tea leaves, and kai ook, a Tai Yai-style chicken stew. Then there are the house signatures, playful yet rooted in place: Kitipanit Som Tam (nicknamed “Elephant Crawl Papaya Salad”) and a grilled chicken salad bright with coriander.

The rice comes in four varieties to choose from; white, brown, sticky, or brown sticky. Side notes like khai pam (eggs grilled in banana leaves) or stir-fried chiang da greens add rustic depth. Close the meal with fusion-style sweets: coconut cream over toasted young rice (kao moa), a whimsical watermelon sundae parfait, or even grilled mango sticky rice.
