Karmic Retributor

Vipassana Meditation Master

Acharavadee Wongsakon

Karma result in two ways; one is how it’s played out and two is the karmic retributor/creditor.When we’ve done something to someone, they have the right to the payback from us. Many of my meditation students’ karmic retributors are their own parents. The more the avenging power, the closer they’ll be to the wrongdoer; and nothing’s closer than a parentchild relationship, a little further would be biological siblings, then husband and wife who later become a karmic couple. That’s why we sometimes feel so hostile towards one another like enemies even in a close relationship.

I’ve seen many students’ attempt to walk on the Dhamma path were obstructed by their parents, some of them even telling their children to focus only on making money and ignoring the spiritual side of life. I really feel sorry for them. The way out is to always send as much loving-kindness to them and the best time to do it is after a Vipassana meditation because the mind has been cleansed of ignorance and darkness, and left with true loving-kindness, not kindness from mere thoughts.

here are many levels to the power of kindness; being born human means having an opportunity to unlockthe karmic code from one another. Even your parents can be your karmic retributors. As parents, they still have compassion to their children deep down, regardless of their harsh treatment. As for the children, they are to defeat the darkness in their mind to feel the gratitude for their parents for giving them flesh and blood. Thus, they have to be very determined to express gratitude to their parents in some ways no matter how badly they are treated and hurt. Both sides have to conquer the darkness encoded within their minds.

That’s why it’s called ‘unlocking the karmic code’ to end the vengeance towards one another with compassion.

A student of mine came to the retreat with so many health problems, and could hardly walk. There was no faith, only hope to find a way to cure her illnesses. When I did a meditation check with her, I heard her karmic retributor say, “I want you bastard to feel how much pain and suffering I had from your doing!”

In this student’s past life, she ordered a punishment that killed this man in a horrible, painful death. Since he was innocent, his grudes were overwhelming. I had to relay the message in the exact words so that she really understood what Karma was and continued the meditation. The more we persevere, the higher the merit will be. Merits from practicing Vipassana meditation is so powerful that it can elevate a soul to a higher realm.

Imagine we had killed someone and went to make merit by giving alms and offering foods to monks out of fear. But this type of ‘object-giving’ merit is easy to do. The Karma of killing cannot be easily undone by this simple merit. That’s why the karmic retributors won’t forgive us for the agonizing pain. The level of merit isn’t the same.

Whereas the merit from Vipassana meditation that is obtained through a practitioner’s diligence, endurance, absolute self-restraint, and determination is so powerful that it can uplift and free the retributor’s soul, resulting in the end of hatred towards one another

Most people seek to escape Karma, never willing to endure the pain and suffering we had inflicted on others. Sometimes, they just want us to taste how bitter they feel so we understand them.

This student moaned that she wanted to go home so I said, “If you go home, it’s going to get worse”. Still, she kept asking me if her illness would go away by the end of the retreat.

Those who want to practice Vipassana meditation to get rid of diseases always end up like this because they are preoccupied with their own problems. But if they seriously practice meditation with the goal to free themselves and admitting their past mistakes, there’s still a chance. You have to admit that this is really the work of Karma. Otherwise, why do other people don’t get sick like you? Why isn’t there any doctor who could make a correct diagnosis?

Humbly accept your Karma but don’t be defeated by fate. We’ve all made mistakes. Learn from them and ensure it will be the last. Keep practicing meditation so you won’t come back to this cycle of rebirth again.
