The Day Over 200,000 People

Had the Same Dream

In late August 1963, more than 200,000 people came together at the Lincoln Memorial. They came from different cities, jobs, and backgrounds. But they all had one clear reason: they came to listen to one man speak.

On that day, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech later known as “I Have a Dream….” In this speech, he helped people see the same picture of what society should be: a world with equality, where people live together without discrimination, and where human value isn’t judged by outside factors.

What was important that day was not only the speech, but what happened. People with many differences were able to stand together as one. They did not think the same about everything. But they shared the same “common ground.”
