Nine Lives of DEMI MOORE
Age is like fine wine, it gets better with time. That speaks very well with Demi Moore, whofinally won her first major acting award at the Golden Globe Awards this year for Best Actress in The Substance, a body horror film that could also be one of the best feminist films after 45 years in Hollywood, known as one of the cruelest industries against female actors, particularly aging ones.
When Moore took on the role of Elisabeth Sparkle, a TV star and fitness guru who was fired from her show when she turned 50 and seek black market potion to create her younger self, she simply thought the role was challenging and resonated with her. Little did she know that it would re-open another chapter of her career.
Even Moore, now 62, didn’t expect it and was “in shock”, saying that before landing this role, she had started to believe she was nothing more than a “popcorn actress” as one producer had put it 30 years ago.
Like a cat with nine lives, Moore’s acting career is one of a roller coaster, going up and down several times. She entered the entertainment business as a model and slowly built her fame through playing several famous teenage films and later known as a member of the Brat Pack. Her global big break came in Ghost, the 1990 romantic melodrama film which grossed over $505 million at the box office and was the highestgrossing film of 1990. The film’s popularity sparked a new hairstyle trend for several years after that. Her other notable films include A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure.
Looking at the list of her choices, you could say Moore is an adventurer at heart. A lot of her roles often came under controversy and challenged long-held beliefs. In Indecent Proposal, Moore was a young wife who accepted a $1-million proposal from a billionaire played by Robert Redford if she agreed to spend one night with him. She went on to become the highest-paid actress with record-breaking salary of $12.5 million to star in Striptease, and shaved her head in G.I. Jane to play the first female recruit in the navy training program.
After a three-year break to raise her three daughters with ex-husband and actor Bruce Willis, she returned to the screen with a string of a flops before accepting a villainess role in the 2003 film Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. She appeared in the film with super-toned body in black bikini, looking strong, sexy, and athlete. At that years later. Earlier, she also graced the cover of Vanity Fair in nude while pregnant. While she isn’t the first woman to do that, her influence on pop culture was so huge that it stirred widespread controversy both in positive and negative ways.
