Q: Respected Professor, I suffer from depression and am verbally abused by my husband every day. However, I endure it all while waiting for the day my children grow up, so I can finally live a free life of my own. Am I making the right decision, or should I choose to give myself happiness starting today and talk to my children so they understand my decision to get a divorce?

A: Giving family advice is quite delicate because everyone’s life needs are different. Living with someone who isn’t spiritually or morally aligned often brings immense suffering. If possible, you should have time that truly belongs to yourself—such as going on a retreat or practicing Dhamma—to feel free and regain the encouragement needed to face your chosen path. You need to muster up the courage to have a rational conversation, expressing how much pain you are in. If they refuse to change, you must insist on having time for yourself to keep from losing your mind. Sometimes, speaking the painful truth directly can be the wake-up call the other person needs.
