Things I have to do vs. Things I want to do

Q: Dear respected teacher,

When making an important decision between “things I have to do” and “things I want to do,” how should I decide? For example, choosing between a job I don’t like but that provides an income to make a living, versus a job I love that might not generate any income, etc. Thank you very much.

A: You should prioritize “self-responsibility” first. If you cannot take care of and be responsible for yourself, you end up burdening yourself—and potentially causing suffering to others, such as your parents or life partner. When your income is not enough to make a living, those around you will suffer as well.

However, if you are not a burden to anyone and you place high value on inner happiness and sufficiency, you can choose the work you love even if it generates no income. Everyone prioritizes life differently, so there is no right or wrong—it all depends on what you value in life.
