From Opium Fieldsto World-Renowned Coffee
Located in Mae Suai District, Chiang Rai, Doi Changis one of Thailand’s finest Arabica coffee-growing areas,recognized internationally. Sitting at 1,800 meters above sealevel, its cool climate and ideal terrain give Doi Chang coffee asmooth, aromatic, and uniquely balanced flavor.
Over 40 years ago, the area was once dominated byopium farming. With limited livelihood options, villagersdepended on it for survival. Under the royal initiative of HisMajesty King Rama IX, locals were encouraged to replaceopium with highland crops. In 1983, Arabica coffee plantswere introduced, along with continuous support.
Today, more than 30,000 rai of land has transformedinto flourishing coffee forests, creating stable incomes andproducing beans known worldwide as Doi Chang Coffee.
Routes to Doi Chang
There are two main routes, each offering a different travelexperience:
- Mae Suai Route – The most popular option. Wideroads, easy driving, and suitable for general travelers.
- Mae Lao Route via Doi Mae Mon – Quieter and morescenic, with narrower roads and fewer cars. Ideal for relaxedtravelers seeking a peaceful journey.
Best Time to Visit
Doi Chang is beautiful year-round. In thewinter (Nov – Feb), you will feel cool weather,morning mist, and coffee harvest season. It’san ideal time for photography and relaxation.Summertime (Mar–May) offers clear blue skyand lush green coffee plantations, with fewertourists. If you’re an avid nature lover, the besttime is between June and October. This isthe greenest and most refreshing period, withmisty landscapes.
