Winter Breeze, Mountains, and Stars at CHIANG MAI

Welcome to Chiang Mai, a classic destination for Thais and travelers from all over the worldparticularly in the winter where the weather is at its best with breathtakingly beautiful nature, making it an ideal place to slow down your life.

Although I have visited Chiang Mai many times, I decided to venture beyond the city areas and explored tourist attractions in five districts which are not too far: Mae Rim, Mae Wang, Mae On, Mae Taeng, and Mae Chaem. Although they are not large districts, they offer several extraordinary things worthy of your time.

Mae Rim – Nature in full bloom, full of tastiest foods

Located about 20 kilometers from Chiang Mai, the area is rich in natural beauty, with stunning sea of mist. Before we began the journey, we started with something delicious to boost our energy: Kriengkrai Mahamitr, a chic market in the Mae Rim area.

You’ll see rows of preserved fruit jars, which serve more or less as a landmark of the area. Previously a warehouse for pickled fruits and vegetables, the place, which means Majestic Comes to Find Friends in Thai, has now been transformed by new owners into a vibrant space featuring galleries, shops, restaurants, and beverages that differ from typical local markets. As the market’s name suggests, it is a very friendly place. It feels natural to strike up a conversation with vendors because of the smile on their faces.

After that, we headed to Komegura cafe (Rice Storage in Japanese). The café is constructed with materials taken from old rice storage barn, and styled with Lanna architecture mixed with Japanese minimalism. Its coffee and matcha, paired with grilled mochi dipped in red bean cream, makes it a great place to recharge before continuing our journey.

Next was Wat Pa Dara Phirom, an ancient temple with Lanna architecture, named after Princess Dararassamee, the wife of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The tranquil atmosphere and beautiful temple structures, such as the Vihara, Ho Phra Keo, Phra Chedi, and Phra Ubosot, are perfect for a peaceful visit.

We then arrived at Mon Cham. You cannot miss the Sky Walk that will lead you through the sea of flowers surrounded by misty view. For flower lovers, continue to Pang Hua Flower Garden to marvel at vibrant colors of several blooming flowers. Don’t forget to take a break at Ainara Café, a Japanese-style café standing in the middle of the field.

Mae Wang – Elephant Riding, Rafting, and Beautiful Temples

If you’re in Mae Wang, you’re in for fun and exciting adventures, particularly elephant riding and rafting. Just an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai, Mae Wang has several rafting services. As our raft was slowly gliding on the Wang River, we spotted elephants along the way. Visitors are welcome to interact with the gentle giants by feeding them or even giving them a bath!

On our way back to Chiang Mai, we took a detour to Wat Luang Khun Win, a beautiful temple in the jungle. It’s an off-the-beaten-path gem with no electricity or water supply, relying on solar power. This is one of Chiang Mai’s hidden treasures worth visiting.
