Taiwan is not just about Taipei! If you’re looking for a trip filled with history, culture, and stunning natural beauty, this route is the answer. The Kaohsiung-Chiayi-Tainan route may not be on the radar of many when planning a Taiwan trip, but I guarantee you will be impressed by the blend of ancient culture and modernity, delicious food, and a warm atmosphere that will make you want to return again.

Kaohsiung: The Perfect Blend of History and Modernity

Let’s start in Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second-largest city, which offers a perfect mix of culture, art, nature, and food. It’s a great starting point for exploring southern Taiwan. I was truly impressed by how this city seamlessly blends ancient history with modernity. Getting around is very easy, thanks to the public transport system including the MRT, light rail, and bike rentals. They cover all the major attractions. Ready? Let’s go!

Pier-2 Art Center: An Art Hub in the Heart of the City

This place is filled with large, exciting, and vibrant outdoor artworks that are sure to make your photos look amazing from every angle. I especially loved the area with handmade crafts for sale, where you can find jewelry, unique craft items, and cool products perfect for souvenirs. There are also many chic cafes where you can relax after exploring the art. If you love art and crafts, you can’t miss this spot!

Burano Kaohsiung (高雄彩色島): A Photo Spot That Feels Like It’s Straight Out of a Postcard

Kaohsiung’s Burano (高雄彩色島) is another must-visit spot! I love how the colorful buildings line the river, much like the town of Burano in Italy. I recommend visiting in the evening when the sunset makes for stunning photos. This place is perfect for social media lovers who enjoy capturing beautiful moments, or for anyone who just wants to relax by the river. If you’re looking for a new, cute, and unique spot to check in, this is the place to be!

Chiayi: The Charm of a Small City and Warm Culture

Just a 35-minute high-speed train ride from Kaohsiung, you’ll arrive in Chiayi, a small city rich in history, culture, and delicious food! Chiayi also has a subtle Japanese influence, as it was an important location during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. This city marks the starting point of the Alishan Railway, which was originally built to transport Hinoki wood from the Alishan mountains to Japan. The Japanese built houses, temples, and pavilions in the city, and even dug hot springs for workers to relax in.

Tainan: The Heart of History and Southern Taiwanese Cuisine

Just a 20-minute high-speed train ride from Chiayi, we arrive in Tainan, a city rich in ancient culture and unique cuisine. I love Tainan because it feels like the “Ayutthaya” of Taiwan, with its history and architecture reflecting a perfect blend of Chinese and Taiwanese cultural roots.

The city is filled with ancient temples, historic buildings, and the flavors of food that clearly tell the story of its past as the old capital. Tainan’s cuisine is distinguished by its sweetness, which reflects the city’s former prosperity. If you’re into cultural and historical travel, you’ll definitely fall in love with Tainan.

Tainan Charm: Anping Old Street

To experience the charm of Tainan, a visit to Anping Old Street is a must. This historic street is lined with old shops selling both local foods and souvenirs. Be sure to try the famous sea crab roe and fried tofu, which are local specialties. Additionally, you’ll find shops offering vintagestyle souvenirs that are definitely worth checking out. If you enjoy leisurely walks and photography, Anping Old Street is the perfect spot to capture the essence of Tainan.

Explore Museums and the History of the Old City

History enthusiasts will especially love Tainan, as the city is home to many fascinating museums. One must-visit is the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, which houses art and antiques from across Asia, including China, India, and Japan. The museum also showcases rotating exhibits from the northern branch. The building itself is stunning, designed with a modern flair that blends harmoniously with the surrounding nature. If you’re into architecture photography, you’ll definitely find unique and picturesque angles both during the day and at night.

Another museum that ranks as one of the most impressive in Taiwan is the Chimei Museum. It has a
European-inspired atmosphere, complete with the Apollo Fountain modeled after the Palace of Versailles, luxurious buildings, and rows of Greek god statues lining the pathways.Inside, you’ll find the world’s largest violin collection, along with sculptures, ancient weapons, and seasonal art exhibitions. This museum is also one of Tainan’s most popular photo spots, so don’t forget to bring extra camera batteries or a power bank!
