MONTREUX & GRUYÈRES

A TALE OF Two Swiss Souls

Where lakeside romance seamlessly weaves into medieval charm.

Montreux

Lakeside Romance, Terraced Vineyards, and Fairytale Castles

The journey begins aboard a train departing Lausanne for Montreux. The scenery unfolds like a painted canvas: to your right, the endless, shimmering expanse of Lake Geneva; to your left, the dramatically terraced vineyards of Lavaux clinging to the hillside. It is easily one of Europe’s most breathtaking rail journeys—a ride so captivating that time seems to slip away far too quickly.

Stepping off at Montreux Station, the atmosphere shifts into that of an elegant Swiss Riviera resort, framed by sprawling vineyards with the majestic Alps standing guard in the background. It is no wonder Montreux remains one of Switzerland’s most iconic retreats, drawing travelers from every corner of the globe.

While the region appears sprawling on a map, the best way to soak in its magic is on foot. From Montreux Station, wander down through the bustling city streets toward the water’s edge, passing charming local boutiques and inviting cafés along the way. The town’s rich heritage comes alive through its striking Belle Époque architecture— from grand historic landmarks like the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace to beautifully preserved townhouses adorned with ornate wrought-iron balconies, wooden shutters, and intricate plasterwork, many of which still serve as vibrant homes and businesses today.

For a delightful pit stop, make your way to Confiserie Zurcher on Avenue du Casino. Serving sweet toothed customers since 1879, this legendary bakery crafts its own selection of artisanal breads, pastries, chocolates, and pralines – a perfect, effortless detour right along your walking route.

Gruyères

Stepping into a Medieval Fairytale and World-Class Cheese

Leaving Montreux behind, the scenery gradually transforms as the train journeys into the Canton of Fribourg. The sweeping lake views yield to rolling pastures, gentle hills, and cozy farmhouses scattered across the idyllic countryside. Your destination is Gruyères—a hilltop village perched just a short ride from Montreux, yet belonging to an entirely different world.

If arriving by train, your first stop should be La Maison du Gruyère at Pringy Station. Located just steps from the platform, this interactive demonstration cheese dairy gives visitors an insider’s look at the production of authentic Gruyère AOP—the region’s prized, PDO-certified cheese. Arrive in the morning to catch the master cheesemakers in action during their live production rounds.

From Pringy, take a quick connection up to Gruyèresville to enter the old medieval core. Perched high on a hill, the village’s cobbled main street winds past stone buildings, traditional cheese shops, quaint eateries, and sweet shops, all leading up toward the grand Château de Gruyères.

Before reaching the top, treat yourself at Chocolaterie de Gruyères, an artisanal chocolate shop tucked away on Rue du Bourg. Here, you can sample handmade truffles, pralinés, and pavés à la double crème—rich, decadent chocolates crafted with the famous Fribourg double cream—to fuel your walk to the castle.

At the top of the village sits the 13th-century Château de Gruyères, once the fortified stronghold of the Counts of Gruyères and later transformed into a grand residential castle. Inside, the highlight is the majestic Knights’ Hall, decorated with sweeping murals depicting medieval local legends. Outside, the meticulously manicured gardens offer breathtaking panoramas: looking down over the village’s cascading rooftops, a clear day reveals sweeping views of alpine peaks encircling the valley below, showcasing Gruyères from its most picturesque vantage point.
