CAMBODIA – In a remarkable display of interspecies cooperation, HeroRATS (African giant pouched rats) trained by APOPO are saving lives in Cambodia by detecting landmines. Their exceptional sense of smell and light weight allow them to clear a tennis court-sized area in just 30 minutes, a task that would take humans with metal detectors four days. One HeroRAT, Ronin, has discovered over 100 landmines, highlighting their invaluable contribution to safety and land recovery in the war-torn nation. For farmers there, the rodents are not pests, but real heroes.
