CHENGDU & CHONGQING

A Spring Expedition

The Spicy & Soulful Journey through China ‘s Southwest

After more than a few rounds of hesitation about joining a trip to China, I finally decided, almost on a whim, to go against my own expectations. What I found, however, was a journey that completely reshaped myperception of the mainland.

This was no ordinary itinerary. We traveled across Sichuan Province and into Chongqing during the cusp of season: a spirited, full-bodied adventure that seamlessly wove together ancient civilization and one of the most futuristic urban landscapes on Earth. Though Chengdu and Chongqing are separated by little more than an hour on a high-speed train, they feel worlds apart, like drifting from the quiet poetry of tea gardens into the electric pulse of a sleepless vertical metropolis.

If there’s a perfect time to go, it’s spring from March to May. Consider it the golden window. Temperatures hover between 15–25°C, cool and forgiving, ideal for long days on foot without the burden of heavy coats. A light jacket is all you need once the sun dips.

CHENGDU

Where Technology Softensinto Bloom

We began in Chengdu. Come March, the city sheds its tech-forward sharpness and softens into something unexpectedly lyrical. Along Hongxing Road, delicate pink-white paulownia blossoms line the streets, their gentle hues playing against the clean geometry of high-rises in a way that feels almost cinematic.

To truly understand Chengdu, you have to slow down. The city embodies a kind of xiaokang lifestyle: unhurried yet quietly modern. At People’s Park, near Tianfu Square, Haitang (crabapple) flowers bloom in abundance. Elderly locals gather beneath them, sipping tea, chatting animatedly, their laughter echoing through the trees. It’s loud, warm, and oddly comforting.

If time allows, step into Heming Teahouse, a century-old institution. Sink into a bamboo chair under the shade, order a pot of tea, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try the traditional ear-cleaning service. The faint metallic chime of feathered tools brushing gently against your ear is strangely hypnotic, an intimate glimpse into Chengdu’s cultural rhythm.

And then, of course, there are the pandas. You can’t come to Sichuan and not meet its most beloved residents. Spring offers the best conditions – cool enough for them to stay active outdoors. Watching these gentle creatures climb trees, munch on bamboo, or simply lounge in the soft sunlight feels almost surreal.

CHONGQING
A City of Mist, Light, andVertical Dreams

From Chengdu, we “warped” into Chongqing via high-speed rail. The shift was immediate. This is a city that feels like stepping into science fiction. Skyscrapers cascade down cliffs along the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, earning it the nickname the Vertical City. It’s layered, complex, and unapologetically bold.

We started in Ciqikou Ancient Town, a district dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Though now bustling with tourists, its narrow stone alleys, wooden buildings, and red lanterns still carry echoes of the past. The air is filled with the unmistakable hum of Chinese street life: vendors selling mala spices (which, at first glance, resemble trays of jewel-toned jelly), roasted nuts, and freshly made peanut brittle, hammered into shape right before your eyes. Sweet, nutty, caramelized – perfect fuel before diving deeper into the city’s maze.

For something truly spectacular, Wulong Karst National Park is worth the journey. Descending more than 300 meters via a glass elevator into a massive sinkhole feels almost otherworldly. At the bottom, the “Three Natural Bridges” rise majestically – stone arches spanning lush valleys, with a lone traditional inn standing quietly among them. In spring, the greenery is vivid against the dark limestone, creating a landscape that feels both ancient and alive. And yes, there’s also a glass skywalk, equal parts thrilling and terrifying.

Back in the city after dark, Chongqing transforms. Nowhere is this more evident than Hongyadong, an 11-story complex of traditional stilted buildings glowing in golden light along the Jialing River. It feels like stepping into an animated dream. For the best view, cross Qiansimen Bridge and look back. The city reveals itself in layers, stacked dramatically against the hillside.
